Tipping Point
October 31, 2006
As expected, current-leaning Rhythmic AC appears to be the "next big thing" in the radio biz. In the past month, the format has gone on the air in Portland (OR), Dallas, Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Phoenix, and Memphis. We've passed the tipping point, and I expect to see this trend continue at underperforming stations (or consolidation situation, i.e. Memphis) across the country.
Congrats to Kane (from WFLZ-FM) who is going to do mornings for a Clear Channel Top 25 market station. In a business where young talent has been extremely undercultivated, Kane is someone with great potential to suceed.
Radio & Records has a fascinating series of round-table discussions by talk radio experts on the topic of FM Talk, available for free viewing online. Here's the link if that interests you. It includes Walter Sabo, who I've met and consider to be the top expert out there on talk radio.
Speaking of FM Talk, Cox 80s "The Point" in Dayton went FM talk in simulcasting News/Talk WHIO, similar to what the company did by putting WOKV on the newly acquired 106.3 WBGB (now WOKV-FM.) With the 80s format all but gone from the national radio scene (with a few exceptions, i.e. Tampa), it will be interesting to see when/if an all-90s terrestrial station is attempted.
